Staying near the CHU Estaing or Les Cézeaux in Clermont-Ferrand
Published 31 October 2026
For an appointment at the CHU (university hospital), a relative's hospital stay, a hospital placement or a semester at Les Cézeaux, the simplest option is to stay along tram line A. It links the city centre, the CHU Gabriel-Montpied and the Cézeaux campus directly, and also serves the area around the CHU Estaing. Here is how to find your way and organise a stay of a few days to a few weeks.
Two hospital sites and a campus: where are they?
The Clermont-Ferrand CHU is spread over two main sites, quite far apart. Check your appointment letter to see which one applies to you.
- CHU Gabriel-Montpied: 58 rue Montalembert, Saint-Jacques district, south of the city centre.
- CHU Estaing: 1 place Lucie et Raymond Aubrac, Saint-Jean district, east of the centre.
- Cézeaux campus (Université Clermont Auvergne): in the town of Aubière, south of the city, a few tram stops from Gabriel-Montpied.
Gabriel-Montpied and Les Cézeaux are therefore in the same area, to the south. This is handy for junior doctors, health students and researchers who split their time between hospital and laboratories.
Getting there by tram and bus
The public transport network is called T2C. Tram line A crosses the city from north to south, between Les Vergnes and La Pardieu Gare.
- CHU Gabriel-Montpied: "CHU Gabriel Montpied" stop. Take care not to confuse it with the "Stade Gabriel Montpied" stop, at the other end of the line, to the north.
- Cézeaux campus: "Cézeaux – Pellez" and "Campus" stops, in Aubière.
- CHU Estaing: the Maison des Parents, just opposite, recommends line A (Stade Marcel Michelin stop) and bus line B.
From place de Jaude, it is only a few stops to the CHU Gabriel-Montpied. One ticket is valid on both tram and bus. Good to know: the T2C network is free at weekends, from Saturday morning to very early Monday, for everyone. Weekday public holidays are not included. To plan your journeys, use the journey planner on the T2C website.
Coming by car and parking
Both CHU sites have car parks, with spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility. During consultation hours, they are often very busy. If you are staying near line A, leaving the car at your accommodation and taking the tram saves you looking for a space and saves time. Parking conditions and fees should be checked with the CHU before your visit.
Accompanying a relative in hospital: accommodation options
The CHU's 2026 welcome booklet lists several options for relatives:
- Les Églantines, a home for the families of hospital patients, near the Gabriel-Montpied site.
- La Maison des Parents Clermont Auvergne, 10 rue Lucie et Raymond Aubrac, opposite the CHU Estaing. It offers 19 studios. Parents of children in the paediatric wards have priority; relatives of adult patients are welcomed subject to availability.
- Temporary non-medical accommodation: a relative can sometimes sleep or take meals with the patient, with the agreement of the ward manager. Prices are available from the admissions offices.
- Hospital hotels: a partner hotel can accommodate the patient the day before or after their hospital stay, on medical prescription. Eligible patients are informed during their consultation.
Contact details for these facilities are gathered on the CHU's relatives and accommodation page. Places are limited: when they are full, or if several of you are coming, a furnished flat nearby is a good alternative.
Tips for a stay of a few days to a few weeks
- Choose line A rather than distance as the crow flies. A property two tram stops away is often more practical than one that is closer but poorly served.
- Go for a fully equipped kitchen. On a long stay, cooking your own meals is simpler and cheaper than eating out.
- Think about quiet and wifi. Junior doctors on call and researchers writing up need to rest and work at their accommodation.
- Stay flexible. A hospital stay can be extended or shortened: ask about extension conditions when you book.
- Bring your documents. Appointment letter, carte Vitale (French health card) and proof of address are useful at the admissions office and for some accommodation support schemes.
