Getting to Clermont-Ferrand by train or plane: station, airport and connections
Published 31 October 2026
Clermont-Ferrand is easy to reach without a car. From Paris, direct Intercités trains leave from Bercy station and take just under four hours. Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne airport, in Aulnat, is about 7 km east of the centre. A single bus line, line B, links the airport, the railway station and place de Jaude.
By train from Paris
The Paris-Clermont line is served by Intercités trains departing from Paris Bercy Bourgogne – Pays d'Auvergne. On the way they call at Nevers, Moulins, Vichy and Riom.
- Journey time: the fastest direct journey shown at the time of writing is about 3 hrs 50 mins. Times vary depending on the train and engineering works.
- Frequency: several direct trains a day, to be checked for your date on SNCF Connect.
Remember to book early for Friday and Sunday evenings, and check the traffic status the day before: the line regularly suffers disruption, especially during heatwaves.
By train from Lyon and the south
Clermont is also a regional rail hub:
- Lyon: TER via Vichy and Roanne.
- Le Puy-en-Velay: TER via Issoire and Brioude.
- Aurillac: TER via Issoire and Neussargues.
- Nîmes: on the Cévennes line, via Brioude, Langeac and Alès.
- Béziers: Intercités via Millau.
Trains from the south also stop at La Pardieu station, in the south-east of the city. This is handy if you are staying near the CHU or Les Cézeaux: La Pardieu Gare is the southern terminus of tram line A.
From the station to the city centre
Clermont-Ferrand station is east of the historic centre. To get to place de Jaude:
- Line B: "Gare SNCF" stop, avenue de l'Union Soviétique, right in front of the station. Buses run every 6 to 10 minutes and go directly to Jaude, then on to Chamalières and Royat. See the line B timetable.
- Line C: "Carnot" stop, avenue Carnot, a few minutes' walk away.
Fares and ticket validity are shown on the T2C website. If you are coming to Royat for a spa cure, line B drops you at the "Royat Place Allard" terminus, right in front of the Thermes: see our article on spa cures in Royat-Chamalières.
By plane: Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne airport
The airport is in Aulnat, about 7 km east of Clermont, roughly ten minutes by car. Air France flies to Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle, and a few routes, often seasonal, serve other cities in France and Europe. The list changes from one season to the next: check the airport website before booking.
To reach the centre:
- By bus: line B has an "Aéroport" stop. Be aware that only some buses go that far: the others terminate at Jules Verne. Check the timetable for your bus.
- By train: Aulnat-Aéroport station, linked to the terminal by a footpath, is about ten minutes from Clermont station by TER, according to the airport's information.
- By taxi: several companies serve the airport; book ahead for a late flight.
Once you are here
Central Clermont is easy to explore on foot, and tram line A and bus lines B and C cover most journeys. To go up the puy de Dôme without a car, a bus line runs all year round to the Panoramique des Dômes station: everything is explained in Puy de Dôme and Vulcania without a car.
If you end up coming by car, Clermont sits at the junction of three motorways: the A71 to Paris, the A89 to Lyon and Bordeaux, and the A75 to the south. Parking is paid in the centre, but several of our properties have a private space, such as those in the Léon Blum residence in Clermont Sud.
Where to stay when arriving without a car
The easiest option is to stay near a line B or tram line A stop. The Résidence Jaude, on avenue des États-Unis, is a few steps from place de Jaude and line B. Our other city-centre flats are within walking distance of the tram, and our map of properties lets you compare locations. All can be booked from one night, with cleaning and linen included: handy after an evening train.
